Cooking & Eating at the Golden Temple Langar (free kitchen)

- Excellent quality food is served for the Langar. The concept of `Langar' (a free communal meal) is a very old tradition an important institution for the Sikhs which was started by the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak. It was designed to uphold the principle of equality between all people regardless of religion, caste, colour, creed, age, gender or social status, a revolutionary concept in the caste-ordered society of 16th century India where Sikhism began. In addition to the ideals of equality, the tradition of Langar expresses the ethics of sharing, community, inclusiveness and oneness of all humankind. In the Golden Temple Complex the huge Langar building is a three storied structure with exposed brick work. The ground and the first floor are used for the Langar, which feeds about 40.000 Pilgrims throughout the day. All the preparation, the cooking and the washing-up is also done by voluntary helpers, known as Sewadars, even Sikh children help in serving food to the people (Sangat). The Langar is financed by donations. Donation boxes can be found on different places of the complex.

Daily about 1,00,000 people have their food here at the Langar (a free meal).
